Ever take a stroll around Times Square? Beyond the neon lights, past all of the glitz, and certainly past all of the tourists and crowds. Even past all of the electronics stores, such as Lafnac Digital Computers, and all the musical instruments stores, such as Sam Ash and the like. Further than the theater, beyond the bars, beyond even the office buildings there is a Times Square few find out about. It is the Times Square of the native New Yorker, the man and woman who makes his living there and even lives within the neighborhood.
That’s a funny word for what is world-famous as an amusement mecca, but men and women really live there, in apartments (and not merely the hotels), and people really work there, in warehouses and factories (and not just the attractions). It’s Times Square, all right, but the kind unknown to tourists – and most of these native New Yorkers like it like that just fine.
